University of Cambridge
SSRMP is an interdisciplinary programme at the University of Cambridge providing research methods training to staff and postgraduate students. Courses cover qualitative, and quantitative research methods, from basic training to advanced statistical analysis.
Project objectives:
- To support academics to transfer their face to face teaching to online
- To emphasise the practical use of the analytical techniques taught, via examples and hands-on experience
- To provide a solid basis for students’ own research, during their time at Cambridge and beyond
Challenges:
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, SSRMP teaching had to be conducted online. Given the rapid move to online learning delivery, academics needed support to reimagine their face to face courses for online delivery. One of the important challenges was to maintain a consistent approach in terms of the architecture and use of digital learning tools available to ensure a high-quality and user-friendly learning experience. Academics didn’t have any prior online teaching experience.
How we helped
I supported the redesign of the programme to transform it from face-to-face to digital-first.
- I consulted with academics to design a course map for their modules and built it within the client’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
- I briefed and supported the academics on how to use a templated format which enhanced consistency.
- I provided support and guidance when required to help academics deliver their expert knowledge using digital tools
- I used the users’ feedback as well as feedback received from the academics to make improvements before modules launch
